Resumo

t is known that vegetable oils, after being submitted to transesterification process, generates vegetable oils esters (currently named as biodiesel) with properties similar to diesel fuel, e.g. density, cetane number, heating values, air-fuel ratio and others. However, subsequent problems of increased viscosity and other inherent to the chemical composition of the vegetable oil, results in worse spraying and combustion, undesirable deposits formation on different engine parts and contamination of the lubricating oil. In this study, it was investigated the effects of diesel/biodiesel blends with d-limonene as an additive. The objective of this work is to make a comparative analysis of the exhaust gas emissions from a stationary CI engine fueled by ternary mixtures diesel/biodiesel/d-limonene, compared to traditional diesel fuel. D-limonene is a terpene extracted from orange peel during juice extraction process. A portable stationary generator was used to perform the tests. Load on the diesel engine was applied by installing a "Resistive Bench Device" equipped with electric lights to simulate an actual operating condition. A gas analyzer, an opacimeter, a digital countertop scale for specific fuel consumption and a type K thermocouple for exhaust gas temperature data were used to conduct the engine tests. Tests were carried out with the three types of fuels (diesel S10, MB10L1 and MB20L3) by varying the resistive load on the generator in order to dissipate power in the coupled diesel engine, under the test conditions. As a result, it was concluded that measured gas emissions for cases involving larger quantities of biofuels were lower when compared to the traditional diesel fuel. Although the two proposed mixtures (MB10L1 and MB20L3) contained larger amounts of biodiesel in their composition, it was observed similar values of specific fuel consumption for the three types of fuels tested.
