CFD SIMULATION OF A SINGLE CYLINDER RESEARCH ENGINE RUNNING ON ETHANOL USING ECFM-3Z

Bruno Vieira Silva

Resumo

Considering the concern about greenhouse gases emission, renewable fuels with lower full cycle emissions of CO2 have become an increasingly advantageous option to replace oil. Ethanol is already widely used in the Brazilian market and is a major source of interest and a main research topic. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of a Single Cylinder Research Engine (SCRE) running on ethanol was conducted using the commercial software STAR-CD with its internal combustion engine module es-ice. The simulation used the RNG-k-ε model for turbulence and ECFM3Z for combustion along with several other sub models to take into account all the effects found in the studied engine. The simulation results were compared with experimental data for validation obtaining a good agreement between experimental and simulation results.
