A REVIEW OF PRECHAMBER IGNITION SYSTEMS APPLIED IN SI ENGINES

Giselle Elias Couto, Carlos Eduardo Castilla Alvarez

Resumo

Social-environmental issues have been neglected for a long time in internal combustion engines development. In recent years, due to increased awareness of its users and manufacturers, reductions in fuel consumption and pollutant emission have become essential requirements for the production and commercialization of engines. A viable solution to achieve these reductions is the use of lean burn engines. However, its low combustion stability is a recurrent preoccupation. The use of a prechamber combustion system rises as an efficient alternative, providing a highly stable combustion. Highlighting the importance of this system, this paper reviews the main advances and limitations on the use of prechamber combustion in spark ignition engines as well as expose its influences over combustion and pollutants emissions.
